Michael J. Doherty (b. 1993) is a Scottish contemporary representational artist. His work ranges from figurative painting and drawing, to portraiture, and still life.
He holds a degree in Fine Art from the College of Art and Design at Dundee University.
Whilst at university Doherty studied with numerous private tutors trained in Florence, Rome, and the United States, and participated in anatomy classes at the Florence Classical Arts Academy, a school which bases its teaching method on the Russian academic tradition.
Wanting to share the knowledge he had gained through his studies, Doherty started teaching privately and continued to do so throughout his academic career, until founding the Scottish School of Classical Art in 2018. Based in Glasgow’s vibrant city centre the school has established itself among students and classical art community, due to its qualitative output and lasting student-mentor relationships.
Besides providing fine art training in his facilities, Doherty has given lectures, talks, courses and workshops at various art schools and private clubs.
Over the course of the years, teaching and studying art academically, he has been influenced greatly by the ethos of the Old Masters, and the greats of American and British illustrators.
Michael J. Doherty’s work is shown throughout the UK in numerous private collections. He has shown at the Royal Scottish Academy among other prestigious galleries.
